2048 is a single-player sliding tile puzzle played on a 4x4 grid. The objective is to slide numbered tiles to combine them and create a tile with the value 2048.
Slide every tile on the board at once. Two tiles with the same number merge into one when they collide, doubling its value and adding it to your score.
Use the arrow keys to slide up, down, left, or right. On a touch device, swipe in the direction you want to slide. On a desktop, you can also click and drag across the board like a swipe.
After every move a new tile (a 2, or occasionally a 4) appears in an empty square. You win as soon as you create a 2048 tile - though you can keep playing past that for a higher score.
The game ends when the board is full and no more merges are possible in any direction. While a round is in progress the New Game button changes to Stop Game - press it any time to end the current round early.
Your best score is saved right in your browser between visits - use Reset Best to clear it.
Check Sprint to race a 90-second clock instead - the board resets and you're chasing the highest score you can rack up before time runs out. Sprint keeps its own separate best score.
